Thoughts on GPS's

Postby jpmjr on Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:54 am

I tend to ride by myself a lot and what should be a 1 1/2 hour ride turns into 3 1/2 hours from getting lost. I'm contemplating the purchase of a Garmin Edge 705 and wondered if anyone has use one of these units (or any other another brand) and has any feedback.

I'll mostly use if for directions but have found a good deal on a full featured unit.

I have the 305, love it. The 705 is their best one. There's many a time I wish I had the mapping functionality on mine. If you're not interested in the power training and such, the 605 will do everything you want.

Someday, I'll have a 705, or equivalent.

My old computer ate it so I bought myself a late holiday present of a Edge 705. It's nice because I can swap it onto all of my bikes so I only need one computer.

The mapping functionality is really nice. As an example I went with Todd on a new loop I didn't know and was able to record it so anytime I want I can use the Edge to retrace the route. On the Garmin website they ahve an area where you can for rides others have recorded and download to your own device to follow as well. Also gives copious amounts of downloadable data to analyze your results.

Thanks for the input. I acutally purchased a new 705 with heart and cadence. In my research people suggested not getting the nav card as computers can't read the nav card. Instead I purchased the dvd maps as it's better for plotting routes on your computer.

I love my Garmin Edge 705. Yes it will get you where you need to go in the event you ever take the wrong turn. I seldom lose my way however when I do get lost, the Garmin 705 helps me find my way. Great product and would buy it again.
