Rider Down - clipped in Weston

Post by Doran Abel »

Probably off the bike for a couple of weeks. I got clipped by a car riding to work this morning (someone cut me off turning right) in the vicinity of Weston High School. Of course the full arsenal of cell phones and flashing lights came out and I was hauled off to Newton-Wells hospital in the wagon. Not too bad - gash over my eye with 5-6 stiches and a slight shoulder separation. I think my old vintage steel steed survived ok, but old front wheel (similar to a Mavic Open Pro) is a goner. Not good since my road training was behind anyway this spring due to work deadline and kid sports - but could have been much worse (no broken collarbone).

Doran, glad to hear you escaped without more serious injuries. Just went through broken collar bone/messed up shoulder last year, so I feel your pain. Get well soon.

Recover well. Glad you are able to write and tell us about it.

P.s. you sure that front wheel wasn't a Zipper Ztech 404 with ceramic bearings and Dugast tubulars ;) ;) ;)

Hope you heal quickly and are back on the bike soon.

I would say something about Weston drivers, but I won't.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, the driver did stop. I'd have to say that she wasn't doing anything reckless just simply didn't see me. I didn't see cell phone use, but I was only seeing the front end steering into me and then the pavement approaching quickly.

For those that have had a shoulder separation - they are calling mine a type 1 AC, although I do have a bump like at Type 2. I am almost feeling good enough to try a run today, but I better hold off a little. Rusto - how soon were you able to run and then ride after yours at Nutmeg last summer? I think yours may have been a little worse than mine.

This was my old late 1980's Miele steel frame bike with most of the original campy components. I think everything is ok except new scratches and I need a new front wheel. Would like to find a decent shape Mavic open pro wheel (front) if anyone has one they don't want or need. The frame and fork have the narrow 125mm spread. I'll post something up on the Classified.

I was running 7 days after my Type 2 AC sep. Shoulder felt fine, I just about ruined my legs though. ;)

Doran - sorry to hear about the accident. Yet another reminder that drivers aren't looking for cyclists.

Rusto and All,
Thanks for the encouragement. I didn't run for about 10 days, didn't ride for about 20 days, and didn't do any weights (I am on the Bruce plan) for about 30 days. Slowly clawing my way back in all 3 and doing quite well according to the Orthoped. It was confirmed as an AC 2. I think I am about 75%-80% back. Of course riding mileage is quite down over all of June and some of July.

I've been considering doing Norwell race this Sun or alternatively the Fundo ride this Sat. Leaning to the latter since I'm not ready to hit the pavement again anytime soon and Norwell can be a little dicey on those tight roads.

Doran, did you get an Open PRO front wheel. I have an old Open PRO on a 105 hub in my basement.

Smudger - interested in the open pro front wheel. Let me know if you have a price and place/time suggestion. Silver? No black on my antique.

I'll be at the FMR tomorrow or the Fundo on sat if you are thinking about either of them.

Rim is Grey hub and spokes silver. Price negotiable. Let me know what you think when you see it. Email me on johnrsmith67 at gmail dot com if the FMR or Fundo are not going to work.
