Each person needs to complete the challenge on a different hill, but I assume that someone can put down multiple efforts on the same hill?

You are correct. You can do multiple efforts on your hill, but you are not allowed to use the hill of someone else's best time.

What is everyone targeting for this challenge?

If you are asking about target hills, I am not sharing that until after I have attempted it!
If you are asking about target elevation gain, my initial goal was to get over 130ft, but after seeing Jacobs early attempt I realize that is not enough to podium, so I am looking for hills where the gradient lasts long enough to gain 150ft. Realistically I think my adjusted (-10ft) result will be in the range of 125-135 ft.

Yeah, hill choice is top secret. 150ft, that definitely rules out a few of the ones I was looking at.

Attempt #1

134ft - 5ft for Cat 3 penalty + 4ft for geriatric bonus = 133ft

I can maybe do slightly better, but I'm not sure I want to

Yes, but you are a Cat3? Over 35? if so, then that is a 9ft advantage over me, so 140ft would be a similar attempt.

Because I am nice and because you are the first attempt, I am going to help you out here.

Sweet thanks. It took me 15 minutes just to get what I had. My mouse is a fickle beast:

I can’t bear to drive 40 minutes for a 1 minute effort. Wyndemere and Pine Hill both seem perfect. Steep AF and consistent grade.

That begs the question — since Jacob did Pine Hill in May does that mean he has dibs in June???? Go!!!

My "issue" here in Woostah is too many to choose from! ;)

And no, the rules didn't start till 6/1 so I'd say Pine Hill is still up for grabs.

Giving away hills, but don't you have the Major Taylor street climb Dave?

It’s like a 22 second climb from a standstill.

Yeah, what Pare said. George St (the Major Taylor climb) is ridiculously steep but way too short, plus it's a pretty crappy area to ride thru.
I think I've narrowed it down to a list of 7 potentials. Now to just see which one provides the best lead-in!

I think I will just go on a long slow ride and ride up everyone's short climbs so I can claim them.

2 issues with that!
1, you can only claim one hill for yourself (your best result)
2, If you don’t actually attempt the challenge on the hill, I’m not going to count it as an attempt and the hill will still be open for others to use/claim.

Two things from my attempt this morning:
1) Need to work on 1 minute uphill (and really 1 minute in general). Failed to hit 120 adjusted.
2) GPS drift messes things up (when I analyze my ride the GPS track has me off the regular road so the elevation readings for my selected section don't match if you actually plot that as a course).

I protest the judges here. (Just kidding)

You can try to click “elevation correction” in Strava. It’s a one way street though and you’re numbers might go down

Tried that and sure enough stuff just went down very slightly.
I think with an incorrect track you need the old SNAP tool they did away with at least a couple years ago

There must be a sweet spot for gradient. I scoped out a hill that I thought would be good but now I think its too steep for you to hold a good speed in terms of vertical ft/min.
Now I'm not sure what grade to target.

You’re welcome to it. I think it’s 10 seconds too short to be optimal.

In simplistic terms I think the steeper the better.

We all have a certain amount kilojoules of energy that physiologically we can release in one minute. Depending on how fit you are (aerobic+anaerobic) the more kJ’s you’ll have. The larger the portion of that energy that goes to overcoming gravity, the better. The rest is lost to air and rolling resistance which aren’t helping you gain vertical. So steeper gradient will equal a lower “speed through the air” for a given vertical rate. Practically though gearing will be the limiter.

Also you can add to your physiological kJ’s by having kinetic energy stored at the base. Ie come into the climb with a high rate of speed because KE=0.5*m*v^2. And if you can gain that KE for free by rolling down an entry hill then that’s even better.
