Did it for my second Wells ever. C race. Great weather, probably 30-35 guys. In summary, I stayed in the top 10 riders the whole race, tried a little experiment for fun at the end, paid for it, but I am pretty sure I still got 7th.
The main story was that with 5 laps to go, we were neutralized because of a crash, and consequently went through 5 laps neutralized. The race essentially re-started again with 5 laps to go (so we did 20 laps total). With two laps to go, everyone was positioning and swerving to avoid leading. I decided to have some fun and just ratchet up the pace and lead myself. I knew I wouldn't win this way, but I would get a good workout. I led until we were in the final stretch for the finish, and then 5-6 guys passed me as they had been riding my wheel. I just didn't have the gas after leading for that length of time, and ended up 7th. It was fun and I am glad I did it, both the race and the "strategy", if you can call it that.
On the crash: I never saw the crash as it was behind me, but apparently a guy hit the curb and then took down 3 other riders behind him. One guy ended up with a broken collarbone. Fire truck & ambulance came. Not sure if that is true about how the crash happened, but I did notice too many guys riding close to the curb. I hate to criticize other riders especially since I still have a ton to learn, but I find it just silly (and dangerous) that people ride that close to the curb. Thanks again Alan & others who taught me to 1) stay left and 2) stay near the front, which led me to another crit safely clear of any crashes once again.
