Wompy Wednesday

Post by Bruce »

Anyone up for Wompy Wed? This is Cat 3-5.
A really good training race; the ride is tough but its worth it.

I would love to join you guys, but I have a mtg tonight that I can't get out of which starts at 7:30 so I will most likely do Stow ride and ditch out a bit early and/or show up a few mins late.

Have fun.

I figured I'd post since I can't really lay down......since some morons took each other down right in front of me on the last lap... nowhere to go but dooowwn. Pretty bad road rash and a broken finger, but my bike (the really important thing!) seems just fine. thought I'd share an interesting observation from the race data file.......

But first congrats to Chris Pare...he's back! He spent the entire race in the top 1/3 of the pack and had a really good finish. Nice. He looked very solid out there.

The race was 2 mph slower 24 vs 26) than last Tuesday's A race and the ave power output needed was 10% lower......but the normalized power was exactly the same as last week and the TSS (Training stress score) was the same at about 134 for 80 mins. (Riding at functional threshold power -- 40k TT intensity-- for 1 hour = TSS of 100). So how can it be that the race was noticeably slower yet the intensity was same?

Well the explanation can be found by looking closely at the peak data. My 5 second and 30 second peak power was much higher than last Tuesday, and I hit my highest peak 2 mins of the year (for a race). I asked Training peaks WKO to tell me how many times I went over 700w for at least 5 seconds -- no less than 20 times! And i had a 4 min breakaway (2 man) with an ave speed of 30mph..........in the A race I would not have gotten very far off the front at that speed. My race plan wa svery different today -- i was looking for a good interval workout .

I think it shows that it is good to race with people who are stronger than you.....and then come back and do a race where you're one of the strongest -- the intensity levels are the same because you are off the front and attacking in the slower race, rather than going at a higher but steadier speed.

Finally just wanted to say that there was some pretty sketchy riding out there today -- riders not holding good lines through turns, sitting in the passing lanes and not pulling through, hitting brakes before wide open turns and shifting lines without looking. That's really the first time i've ever seen this in this race. Its usually safe.

So Bruce, the finger's broken, eh? Can't say I'm surprised after seeing it last night. I'm not a doctor, but generally when the 3rd knuckle on you're finger has a permanent 45 degree angle to it, not good  Heal up quick, man....

My finish was peculiar -- I figured to go in any move in the last 2 laps that looked promising as I didn't really want to contest a sprint finish and I was OK with using my last matches on a flyer to get a good workout. Besides, it's better to burn out than fade away, right? Anyway, on the last 1/2 lap, seconds before the crash, a guy attacks up the right side, I jump on his wheel, and we're off. We get to about 300m out from the finish, way to far to sprint alone, and he simply sits up, pulls over, and slows way down. With the pack barrelling down I had no choice but to dig deep and go, but you can fill in the blank, caught and passed by about 15-20 guys before the finish. I turns out the guy was a Cat 1 or 2 Masters, and the race director let him race with us on Wednesday instead of Tuesday, but told him he couldn't contest the finish. Kind of annoying that he attacked and then un-attacked. Oh well, still a good workout.

That guy is Wade Summers.....you picked a good steady wheel to follow. He can get away with an all white uniform! There was another cat 2 masters guy Sam Morse -- he was riding power cranks - it was just weird seeing him coast with both feet down:)
