Tough day. Finished 7th in Age and 281 out of 1,700 for the day. Crushed the swim, 29th overall and bike at 77th after bike. Suffered on the run. Lesson learned for me on this event:
1. Eat a breakfast, not just a powerbar.
2. Overhydrate in warm weather.
3. Focus on Sprint Tri's, Olmpic distance Tri's and Aquabikes. Faster runner in the shorter distances and always am first going into the run for the Aquabike.
I was on target to do my best time as I was averaging under 9 minutes for 9 miles, then the perverbial wall hit. Absoultely no energy left and locked up quads, calf and back. Had to walk a good portion of the last 3 miles. Too bad as 3 guys passed me and finished seconds ahead of me. 3 minutes slower overall vs 2010. Oh well still proud that I starting running again with a mile to go. Lots of folks were slower this year so can't be too disappointed.
Feel pretty good today, back is a bit sore but muscles okay. I am going to do 2 Aquabikes on 9/10 & 9/11 and then a Sprint in Newport on 9/24. Need to get two Aquabikes in for USAT ranking. Really felt good on the bike did not crush it this time, and felt good on the run up to that 9 mile mark.
Jimmy Lewis had a good day finishing 246th overal and 12th in Age group. Great run, I have to learn from him to negative split the last 3.25 miles instead of hitting the wall.
Chad Gould also finished under 6hrs for the day.
All in all a good event although rumors are that they will eliminate the Sprint in 2012. Too bad as they had 1500 sprinters. Sad because this is how folks get their start in Tri's. The Ironman organization needs to look at the bigger picture in getting more Americans involved and fit.
