Since my cross bike comes with a throttle I figured I would post a couple of reports. I do wear MRC socks during these events.
NETRA Remsen, NY
Having done this race last year and with perfect weather this year, I knew it was going to be a sketchy fast race once again. Tapping through third into fourth gear only to have a clean, slicker than hell off camber root taking up the whole trail kept most racers on their toes. Not having the speed or balls to keep it pinned I played it cautious. Being a shorter fast course I would be lapped a couple of times by the pro front-runners. I managed to hold my own with a small B Senior class and brought it home for the final podium spot.
NETRA Burrillville, RI
This course was the exact opposite of the previous weekends race. With rocky swamp section after rocky swamp section there was no way to find a rhythm. After talking with a couple of the morning race entrants it was apparent this was going to be a race of attrition. I managed a decent start and settled in trying to find some passable lines through the slop. At the end of lap one I was in fourth. Feeling comfortable and finding good lines, lap two was exhausting through the swamps but I was able to recover. To my surprise I came through the second lap in first. Lap three started out like lap two but half way through I started to bonk. I managed to keep the bike moving but that was about it. Coming up to the final quagmire all the good lines were taken by fallen or stalled racers. Choosing a less than stellar line, I found myself riding with water up to the tank of the bike. Just as I was about to exit the deep stuff I hit a rock, or turtle for that matter, and the bike and me took a swim. I figure that was it. I was able to get the bike righted and gave it a less than hearty kick figuring it was swamped. To my amazement the KTM fired and I was on my way to the win.
