Checking Interest, Road Race Simulation Ride Sat Out of Stow

Post by Robd2 »

I know a lot of folks are out of town, might need some rest, weather, and other scheduling issues can get in the way so just checking interest now on a hard ride out of Stow this coming Sat, maybe launching around 10AM.

With the spring races coming up quick the goal would be to keep the pace of this one pretty hot to help sharpen us up. I’m thinking two loops of the Wed night ride at a “Semi Drop” pace for somewhere between 3-4 HRs. What I mean by “Semi Drop”, the lead group may slow slightly as they see fit, maybe a quick 60sec stop in Harvard center, and then a few minutes break to refill bottles/nature break between loops back at the Shaws lot.

As John pointed out if you’re worried about hanging on, stay off the front. The Wed night route works well for this format because of its familiarity to most and there are a lot of shortcuts if you want some additional help.

Looks like a great idea Rob!

I'll be getting my miles/hours in earlier that day (road/trainer depending on the weather) as I have a commitment at 11 am.

I love the idea, and will try to get home clearance to accomodate 10. Are you open to other slots in the day or is this your only window?

Timing for me is somewhat flexible. I’m thinking rollout sometime between 8:30 and 10:30.

Thanks to those guys that responded. I think at this point 3 might not be enough to pull this off so I’m going to cancel. I know you guys have tough weekend schedules so didn’t want to bail at the last minute. Let’s try again the following weekend when the boys are back from the west coast.

For those that still want a “hot” ride some other things I’m watching for the weekend. I’ll probably try to get one in for Sat and Wells on Sun. Unfortunately I’m always a game time decision due to my unpredictable work schedule.

Monsters Sat ride
CRW fast 42 Sat in Newton, not sure if this one is running yet.
Plainville Spring Series Sat, would be fun to do a double (3/4, 4/5) here.
Wells on Sun
Anything else local?

Great idea. I'm on the west coast for work this week and next week (work not cyclying) but will definitely consider a ride next Saturday (CRW) or Sunday (Wells). The CRW ride runs year-round so it's always on. The only question is the size of the fast group and whether they are going at race-pace. This early in the season there it's iffy on the speed and size of the group but by April 1st expect that the intensity will ramp up.
The other race-prep ride is Tuesday nights' Worlds, 6pm start. It's similar to the Sat CRW although it meets at about a mile into the Saturday ride at the intersection after the 128 overpass. It's only 25 miles or so but incredibly intense from the gun. Averages 24-26 mph and that's with rush hour traffic and lights. Cort and others have a better read on when it starts. I can't recommend this ride enough for race prep.

Very good info Len, thank you. I like to keep an "inventory" of these fast rides to work around our crazy schedules. Anybody know if the fast group rides are running out of gearworks yet?

I'll post when it's officially on.

You the man Mark, thank you. For those of you not familiar, I hear these A group GearWorks rides are some of the toughest around.

A short summary on the Gear Works Tuesday Night Rides.
There are three groups that leave GW at 6pm. A, B+, and B. Apparently someone took offence to calling it a C group.

The B and B+ rides are no drop, well the B is for sure no drop. On a rare occasion the B+ ride will come back asking where "X" rider went off too.

The A ride is an every man for themselves. If you get drop I hope you know the area or have a GPS to get your butt home because it's a rare occasion they wait up for people. They will wait if you have a flat or mechanical. But have a second flat... BUHBYE!

The route for any of the three is never posted anywhere and announced in the lot. Don't be surprised that if you are close to the shop on the return to see an extra few miles of a hill thrown in because there's extra daylight. It's show, hear where the group is going, and jump on.

All three typically go in different directions, so there isn't an option of getting picked up by the next group coming through.

The B+ and the A are typically similar in length of the ride and close in effort. The biggest difference in the A ride is, it's GO from the moment they leave the parking lot and the hills are crushed by the Cat 1's and 2's. The B+ ride will at least get a 10min warm-up in before they go HAHHHD. But when the pace line gets going it's a nice ride!

Every week I toe the line and leave with the A group saying a little prayer that I make it back with the group. I've found that secret to be if you can survive the first 15-20min you are good for the rest of the ride. Plenty of times I've been in the middle of Mason NH watching them just go away no matter what I do on the hills. Another secret is the obvious one... The moment you find yourself on the nose of the pace line GET OFF THE HELL OFF!

Group sizes. A ride is typically about 6 riders (yeah, lots of fun). B+ and B rides can sometimes be 20+ strong.

OK that's my two cents on the GW rides. It'd be great to see some MRC'rs out there some times.

I like it Jeremy. We need to start poking at the 545 guys so we can get more sparring partners to come out and play.

On another related note, the Landry's group rides are also starting in a couple of weeks. I can't speak for any of the other locations, but I know that the Westborough ride is good for anyone looking for a relaxed, easy ride Saturday mornings. At least during the late summer months when I first rode them. According to one "Great White Hope," these rides are filled with scary racer-type monsters the beginning of the season, so maybe they might be more suited to all you... racers ;)
Hopefully I'll see some MRC uniforms on Saturday mornings
