Zwift vfmr #9 Friday 2/17 6:15 AM

Post by cbusick »

MAKE SURE YOU GO HARD ALL THE WAY TO THE START FINISH BANNER IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY WITH WHAT ZWIFT POWER REPORTS AS YOUR RESULT!!!!!!

WARNING: The last couple weeks Zwift has been finishing the 2nd lap where we stage, not at the Start/Finish Banner.
That's about 500m short of the actual finish.
They claim a fix is in the works.
Zwift Power is using when you cross the start/finish line after the Banner to report results.

Join the Minuteman Road Club for their Friday morning ride. Should take about 1 hour.
2 Laps of the London Loop (including box hill). That's 9.2 miles/loop.
Steady group pace of 2.5 w/kg on the flats and throat punching on Box hill.

LAP 1:
Steady 2.5 W/kg from the start to the Box Hill KOM
Attack Box Hill. The leader will act as a back marker on Box hill, maintaining a steady 3.5 w/kg up Box hill (around 8:45 for the segment)
After the banner at the top of box hill, if you are ahead of the leader, soft pedal at 1 w/kg until the leaders group catches you.
The leader will go back to 2.5 w/kg at the banner and sweep up those that are soft pedaling.

LAP 2:
Steady 2.5 W/kg until the start of the Box Hill KOM
Everyone should be behind the leader until we cross the line marking the start
of the Box Hill segment.
Then hammer time from the bottom of Box Hill to the finish line (around 5 miles)

In. And if the last two races I've done are an indication the recent update fixed the finish issue.

I had to use my phone as a hotspot this morning for the ride. It worked fine, the average bandwidth was 37KB/s so not bad at all. 164MB total against my plan. (almost invisible compared to whatever the hell my son does on his phone all day)

ok, so for those of us who are N00Bs, a little explanation please:

1) You start zwift at let's say, 6AM and start on the London course. Do you warm up and then return to the start line?
2) How do you know when to start at 6:15? Should everyone else be visible on the course at the start?
3) Does zwift show you your Watts / KG? Must have missed that. Why not % of FTP?
4) What's your setup. So, when I train I plug in my laptop to a TV. The laptop isn't super close to the bike and the TV is maybe 8-10 ft away. Some of the zwift lists are a bit small to read (e.g: who is near you). Do you guys ride with a laptop literally at your side?
5) Does everyone have KICKR or similar that is controlling the resistance? I am still using an old school trainer with a powertap.
6) It's a bit unclear what is supposed to happen when you click the link above. It doesn't take you into the app... but maybe it adds you to the rides you are doing?

Carl, answers:

0) get the mobile app, it makes things way easier, then "follow" all of us
1) if you've "entered" an event (easiest way is through the app) yo will be teleported to the start line of the event. So you can preride all you want and not worry.
2) it happens automagically if you are entered in the event
3) you see watts in big numbers upper left and watts/kg in small numbers next to your name in the list on the right
4) desktop pc driving a 40" tv I'm probably 5 feet from the screen
5) no. A dumb trainer with power meter on bike is fine
6) get the mobile app and it will all make sense

Hope to see you again next week

Carl,
What I think you did this morning is start Zwift on your mac, then clicked on our event to join it. Then waited for something to happen. If you'd just hit the big orange button that says "RIDE" you would have been all set.

What Zwift is expecting you to do is "join" an event either by clicking on the event on your way in, like you did, or pre-registering through the mobile app before the event. Then choose whatever course you like and start riding as a preride before the event.

When it gets close to the start time of the event a blue button will show up in the lower left while you are riding with a countdown until the event begins. Click on that at any time to go to the staging area, where you'll be on a virtual trainer with the rest of us watching the countdown to the start.

Yes, the mobile app makes it a lot easier to navigate. You can go to the menu and pre-register for any event and then follow along with what Chris said.

For my setup I found a cheap smart trainer, $300, and am still using my power-tap wheel. Computer program controls the trainer and my avatar reacts to my power tap. I don't have it hooked up to a TV yet to it's about 3ft in front of me.
