Short report: My first Cat 2 50+ MTB race on a not too hot but very dry day. Lined up with 14 other racers after taking photos (gallery here) of the Cat 3 and Cat 1 fields (2's raced last for some reason).
Hung in on long gravel road start climb and was 5th going into the woods, fumbled several times on lap one and bled several more spots. Regained composure, finalluy started seeing the lines to take (instead of t-boning EVERY root and rock). Rode with another guy for most of lap 2 then passed him and one or two others.
Finished 9th, very, very tired and dried out. Turns out I was 3rd guy to finish from MA who had an annual license so I'm MA State Championship bronze medalist, hehe.

The guy on the right looks like it's all he can do just to lift his arms.
This is your best result, Russ, 'cause you weren't sandbagging. Nice job.

Russ, your MTB comeback this season is great. I'm sure this will translate into CX success too.
To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first.
